Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger are popular in process industries because they occupy less space and offer reasonable temperature drop. The apparatus consists of fabricated shell, inside which tubes with baffles on outer side are fitted. The present set up is a 1-2 heat exchangers, with cold water flows through shell. Valves are provided to control the flow rates of hot and cold water. Flow rates of hot and cold water are measured using Rotameters. A magnetic drive pump is used to circulate the hot water from a re-cycled type water tank, which is fitted with heaters and Digital Temperature Controller.

The present set-up has a facility to interface the system with computer which enables to log the experimental data using computer. The educational software and data-logging package has been developed for unit. The software environment base is of Lab view of NATIONAL NSTRUMENTS, USA. This software is compatible to interfacing unit designed by
“Lab Smith”. This software package provides a comprehensive educational software environment within which the investigations can be performed. This software is capable to tabulate the sample readings according to the requirement of experiment under study and results obtained can be compared. The real time data acquisition can be done by interfacing the set-up with computer using software. Software allows the user to have control on data logging, printing the stored data, preparing spread sheets in Excel etc.

  •  To calculate the Overall heat transfer co-efficient. 
UTILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Water supply 20 lit/min (approx.) and drain.
  •  Electricity Supply: 1 Phase, 220 V AC, 4 kW.
  •  Floor area of 1.5 m x 0.75 m.
  • Computer System: Pentium IV with DVD Drive, Windows 7, MS-Office pre-loaded. One USB slot required in PC for DATA ACQUISITION CARD.
