Mini Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator (Mini TENS)
Mini TENS is a low-frequency current modality most widely used as the analgesic physiotherapeutic modality. Mini TENS controls pain non- invasively and without narcotics.
Pain is an undemonstrative subjective feeling accompanying the stimulation of nociceptors. The information about the pain is sensed by receptors or nociceptors and is carried to the higher centers in the brain through the fibers. These fibers group themselves into tracts in the spinal cord and send the impulses to and fro the brain through tracts called ‘Spinal Tracts’.
During mini TENS, pulsed currents are generated by a portable pulse generator and delivered across the intact surfaces of the skin via conducting pads called Electrodes. The conventional way of administering mini TENS is to use electrical characteristics that selectively activate large diameter ‘touch fibers without activating smaller diameter nociceptive fibers. Evidence suggests that this will produce pain relief in a similar way to ‘rubbing’ the pain better. In practice, conventional mini TENS is delivered to generate a strong but comfortable par aesthesia within the site of pain using frequencies between 1 and 250 pulses per second and the pulse duration between 50 and 1000 u/s.
